DEBARY (AP) — A family’s small but technically illegal flock of chickens that help the family’s autistic son won a 60-day reprieve from the city’s code enforcement board.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that 2-year-old J.J. Hart has become attached to his family’s chickens since his parents got them earlier this year. The boy has autism spectrum disorder.

On Wednesday, the city’s code enforcement board made a temporary decision that only delayed a potential $100-per-day fine under the current law.

The case opens the door to a community campaign to allow the birds in yards around town.
