When wastewater reaches a certain level, it triggers the pumping machine, which pushes the water toward the wastewater facility.

Funding is in place and all that is needed to start replacing a corroded wastewater line is the arrival of new piping.

All of this became necessary when on Aug. 30, while cleaning a wastewater pipe blockage on East Wabash Street near the intersection with Idlewood Avenue, workers discovered a section of piping had eroded and subsequently collapsed. The discovery came about, according to City Manager George Long, when a truck being driven down the road leading to the wastewater facility sank into a cavern the erosion had created. Neither the truck was damaged nor the driver harmed, said Long.
