A groundbreaking ceremony for the Sea Poacher replia is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at 9:45 a.m. on the grounds of Summerlin Academy.
A four-year effort by the Sea Poacher Base, a member of United States Submarine Veterans Inc., has culminated with Polk County getting a submarine veteran’s memorial at Summerlin Academy. Base Commander Jack Merrill, began this effort shortly after forming the Sea Poacher Base.
The Roy Holland Gallemore Submarine Veterans Memorial will be about 20 feet wide and 30 feet long. Roy H. Gallmore’s father, Roy Trent Gallemore, was also a submariner, and Roy H. was the nephew of the Honorable Spessard Holland. Both the Gallemores were U.S. Naval Academy graduates. Roy H. Gallemore rode the USS Sea Poacher (SS-406) on all four of her war patrols during World War II.
