FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputy has been killed in the line of duty.

Authorities say Sgt. Gary Morales was shot while making a traffic stop Thursday morning south of Fort Pierce.

The 13-year-veteran was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A suspect is in custody.

It was the second shooting of an officer in a matter of hours in St. Lucie County. A Port St. Lucie officer was shot in the pre-dawn hours Thursday while responding to a domestic dispute.

He was released from the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

No further details on the deputy shooting were immediately available.
