In his effort to build support for the 2014 transportation tax to pay for bus service and for bridge and road repair, the executive director of the Lakeland Area Mass Transit system took his pitch to the Tiger Bay meeting Wednesday.
Tom Phillips said we’re already paying a transportation tax, however, he asked is the way we’re paying fair to the taxpayers? Currently the transportation tax is paid for through a mill in the property taxes. Then the county contributes $4 million from the budget’s bottom line, he said. The ballot seeks to change the funding to come from a 1 cent surtax from sales taxes.
