BOWLING GREEN, Fla. (AP) — A driver who didn’t realize a school bus had stopped to pick up students swerved onto the shoulder of State Road 62 and hit three children.

The Florida Highway Patrol says one of the children — 9-year-old Caylin Morgan Skipper — was critically wounded Thursday morning. Two other children suffered minor injuries.

Troopers say 69-year-old Louis Edward Stephen told them he thought the red lights on the school bus were the flashing lights at a nearby intersection. By the time he realized it was a school bus, he wasn’t able to stop. To avoid a collision, Stephen swerved right and hit the children, who were getting onto the bus.

The critically injured child was flown to Tampa General Hospital.

Stephen is charged with failure to stop for a bus.
