With the safety of the students on the tops of their intentions there will be an increased presence and patrolling of law enforcement officers and deputies at the county’s schools.

The District’s Office of Safe Schools and each of the school’s leadership will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to monitor school grounds during school days.

School Resource Officers and School Resource Deputies will continue as assigned to the District’s middle and high schools.

Emergency practice drills, crisis support, disaster emergency and contingency plans, visitor tracking systems and locked classroom doors are in place.

Girl Scout cookies
going on sale

Monday, Jan. 7 was the cookie start time as the 2013 Girl Scout Cookie Program in Polk, Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas and Sumter counties got under way.

Through the Cookie Program, girls build five essential life skills: goal setting, money management, decision making, people skills and business ethics. Empower girls to become future leaders by supporting the Girl Scout Cookie program.

Girl Scouts in west central Florida will take orders on those familiar cookie order cards from through Jan. 27, and the cookies will be delivered beginning Feb. 15.

scholarships available

Students interested in applying for the Fulbright scholarship award should submit their application materials directly to the Fulbright Commission by March 11 deadline.

The Shakespeare’s Globe Education Theater Program was picked by the Fulbright Commission as one of its Summer Institutes for the next three years.

Three Fulbright scholarship winners will attend AIFS’ Shakespeare’s Globe Education Theater Program each year from 2013-2015. Students that win the award will have the majority of their program costs covered including round-trip airfare, tuition and fees, accommodations, insurance, social program and meals.

On the program, students spend three weeks at Shakespeare’s historic Globe Theater in London, where they have an opportunity to study intensively with actors, directors, and other theater practitioners. The program runs from June 17 through July 5.
