Don’t be afraid to call the police

Bartow Police Chief Joseph Hall

All too often, when I am out in the public doing speaking engagements, or just talking to residents at local neighborhood watch meetings I am asked the same question: “When is it appropriate to call the police?”

Most people follow that up with, “I don’t want to overreact, or I don’t want to be the one to call the police all of the time, or I don’t want to be bothersome.”

This answer is really very simple, but of course holding true to my form I am going to explain.

We are fortunate in Bartow to have our own police department. And as your chief, my philosophy is simple: Our department should be a reflection of the community in our views, enforcement, and quality of life issues that are a concern to you. The success of the department depends solely on the support of the city and its residents. No one knows your neighborhood like you do, the people who live there, visit there and the things that go on that don’t belong. So, you should be our eyes and ears out there. Report any activity that you are concerned about to the police department, and let us handle it from there. Our staff and officers deal with a lot of different issues daily, and even if you don’t know where to turn for any questions or concerns that you may have, we most likely can, at the very least direct you to the right person. This community is ours too, and we want it to be safe and secure for everyone.

The quality of life in Bartow depends on all of us; it really is a partnership between your local government and you.
