OCALA (AP) — A north Florida man who killed a black bear has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Records show that 48-year-old J.C. Calton was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges. Calton must also surrender his bow to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and pay a $250 fine.
FWC officers reported finding a large bear that had been killed with a broadhead arrow in the Ocala National Forest on Aug. 26. The body appeared to have been dragged by a vehicle. The officer’s followed the path back to Calton’s home.
The officers say Calton admitted to luring the bear to his yard the previous night and then shooting it with a bow and arrow.
