A new report released by Florida Impact and the Food Research and Action Center found that DeSoto schools have one of the lowest participation rates in the state when it comes to the percentage of low-income children participating in the free or reduced breakfast program.

The report measures the reach of the School Breakfast Program throughout the state and in each of Florida’s 67 county school districts by comparing the number of low-income children eating school lunch to the number of such children eating school breakfast. Participation rates ranged from 87.3 low-income children eating school breakfast for every 100 eating school lunch in Glades County, to a low of only 31 per 100 in Sarasota County. Franklin, Highlands, Hamilton and Jefferson rounded out the top five districts for participation, while DeSoto, Dade, Clay and Wakulla were in the bottom five.
