Hitting the trail for a family adventure

Sometimes when Mother Nature beckons, you just have to answer that call of the wild ... despite sneaky little ninja ticks, freezing weather and the ever-present threat of being eaten alive by a bear. Now that’s what I call family fun! My wife and I, and our two daughters and their families, made the four-hour trek to Ocala National Forest last week and spent four days and three nights “communing” with nature and getting in touch with our inner pioneer. We found that sometimes those inner pioneers emerge as needed, and sometimes they refuse to come forth.

Let me say first that the only resemblance to “glamping” (glamour camping with luxurious amenities) was a pitcher pump for water and a frigid concrete outhouse 100 yards down the trail. We cooked over the open fire and on a Coleman stove, chopped our own wood, and sheltered ourselves against the cold that produced an inch of ice in a pan of water one night. But it was fun.
