Although the players on this year’s seventh-grade squad showed skill and potential, volleyball was a new sport for many, and that factor has fueled the team’s strategy throughout the season. While several of their opponents have elected to take a “three-hit” approach to return the ball to their opponent, Coach Fuerstenberg and her team elected to play power volleyball and set the ball up for quick attacks.
At the beginning of the season the Panthers frequently committed errors setting up their attacks, allowing their opponents to take advantage with a more “free ball” strategy. By the end of the season, however, the skill development and strategy paid off as the DeSoto Middle School Panthers took advantage of Hardee’s free ball passes and swept the Wildcats 25-20 and 25-18
