PUNTA GORDA — It may not be as lucrative to the local economy as spring training baseball, but the Flatsmasters Redfish Series is making an impact. More than 50 teams qualified for the two-day Charlotte Harbor Championship, with anglers coming from Tampa and Naples.

Capt. Kris Howell came from Tampa for the shot at a new boat. After weighing a total of 17.24 pounds, including a daily best of 9.11, he and Team Redzone are the favorites heading into today’s competition.
