One way or another, taxpayers foot the bill

We all sort of know that Medicare is federal government medical insurance paid for by deductions from our Social Security and paychecks and employer-matching funds, while Medicaid is a federal/state-funded medical program for low-income people. But I have to admit that with all the hoopla over health care delivery in this country, I felt less than informed on the subject, so I set out to educate myself.

Florida is 48th among the 50 states in the number of people who have health insurance. One in five people (20 percent) have no way to pay their medical costs. That’s after private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. So as we look at expanding Medicaid rolls to cover some of the uninsured, the impact is significant.
