The Fort Meade Miners would host the Class 5A Tenoroc Titans in the regular season finale as the Miners celebrated Senior Night.
The Titans would take the opening kickoff and move to midfield before punting it to the Miners starting play at their own 16 yard line. The Miners would move 74 yards in 15 plays but had to settle for a 28-yard Jack Cortez field goal to give the Miners a 3-0 lead with 4:33 left in the first quarter.
The Miners would force the Titans three and out and take over on downs after a failed fake punt by Tenoroc. It would take the Miners just five plays to go 36 yards to paydirt as Jay Smith found the Malik Brown for a 26 yard touchdown pass with 56 seconds left in the first quarter. Cortez’ kick was good and the Miners ended the first quarter with a `10-0 lead.
The Miners defense would step up with Ladarius Clark picked off a Titans pass at the Miners 44 yard line.
A 23 yard run by Ryan Fulse moved the Miners into Titan territory. DJ Clark would pick up a quick nine yards before Smith once again found Brown at the goal line for a 34-yard pass. On first and goal from the one Fulse would bang over for the score. Cortez’ kick failed to cross the goal post but the Miners led 16-0 with 10:58 left in the second quarter.
The Titans would scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 16-8 with 7:37 left in the second quarter.
Following the Titans kickoff the Miners would put on a serious run game getting 21 yards from Clark, 25 yards from Fulse culminating with a nine yard touchdown run by Chris Morris. The two-point try would fail but the Miners led 22-8 with 6:31 left in the half.
Fulse came up big three plays later intercepting a Titans pass and returning it to the Titans 40. This drive would be all DJ Clark as a senior back ripped off a 12-yard run followed by a Titans personal foul moving the ball to the Titans 16 yard line. On third and 12 Clark took a screen pass from Smith and followed his blockers into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass giving the Miners a 29-8 lead with about four minutes left in the half.
The first half would be marked by numerous penalities for both squads in a highly competitive two periods.
The Miners would come out fast and furious in the second half following a 25 yard kickoff return to midfield. The Miners would get a seven yard run from Clark, a 26-yard run from Fulse before Smith hit Morris over the middle for a 17-yard scoring pass for a three play drive taking 52 seconds. Following the Cortez kick, the Miners led 36-8 with 11:08 left in the third.
The Mienrs dfense would force a three and out and Fort Meade would take over at their own 39 yard line. It would take just one play for the Miners to score. A Isham Alexander raced 51 yards on a scoring run. Cortez was good and the miners led 43-8 with 9:36 left in the third quarter.
The 35 point lead would tick in a running clock as the Miners substituted freely the rest of the second half.
The highlights for the backups came in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Connor Slay went 16 yards on a bootleg to pick up a first down for the Miners offense. The Miners would total 450 yards of offense with 297 on the ground and 157 through the air. While the Miners defense held the Titans to 53 yards rushing and 38 passing for 91 total yards.
The Miners would host Tampa Catholic in first round of Class 3A playoffs next Friday at Battle Field. Tickets are $8 and kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The tickets can be purchased at the school or at the gate.
