Plenty of Terrell Gordon, with just enough of Jordan Washington and Zackery Beeles sprinkled in, was the right recipie for the DeSoto Bulldogs Friday night as they traveled north to defeat Frostproof, 22-21.
Both teams entered the game undefeated, and while Frostproof dominated early, DeSoto appeared to wear the host Bulldogs out as the second half wore on, ending the game on a 14-play drive that ate the final 7:02 off the clock to seal the win.
Neither teams scored in the final 12 minutes, and Desoto had the only points of the third quarter, a safety midway through the frame when a punt snap went out of the Frostproof endzone, and a 10-yard touchdown run from Gordon, capping a nine-play, 80 yard drive with five seconds to play in the third. Gordon carried on eight of those plays, and and Washington had one run for 22 yards as well.
Those turned out to be the only points of the final two periods, after a crazy second quarter
DeSoto opened the scoring on the night in what turned out to be a wild period – a total of five touchdowns were scored – thanks to a Frostproof miscue. A bad punt snap led to a block, and the visitors set up shop at the Frostproof 31 late in the first quarter. All 31-yards were negotiated by Terrell Gordon, including runs of eight and nine yards on the drive that lasted just 2:27. Gordon went up the gut from five yards out to cap the short six-play drive, putting DeSoto up 7-0 with 10:29 to go in the second quarter.
Frostproof got that right back on its ensuing possession, needing just seven plays to go 75 yards, capped on a 45-yard scamper by Cecil Cherry to tie the game at 7 with 7:11 to play before intermission, and took the lead less than five minutes later when freshman quarterback Xavier Gaines, who at 6-3, 210 is already getting serious major college looks, lofted a perfect 40-yard spiral to Daniel Knighten. With the point after kick, Frostproof was up 14-7 with 2:31 to go before intermission.
That was short lived, however, as Desoto’s Dequan Richardson broke free up the middle on the kickoff, eluding his last tackler at the Frostproof 45, for a 90-yard touchdown return. The extra point kick was missed, however, leaving DeSoto down 14-13 with 2:16 remaining in the second quarter.
But the hosts were not done, driving from their own 40 in the final two minutes, with Gaines hitting Reggie Allen deep in the right corner of the endzone to put Frostproof up 21-13 at intermission. The Bulldogs rolled up 312 total yards of offense in the first half, while DeSoto had 75, all on the ground.
The Bulldogs actually scored, what would have been their fourth TD of the quarter, on a 40-yard play with no time on the clock when Gaines scampered 40 yards, but the TD was called back on a questionable block-in-the-back penalty.
Both clubs came into the game with 2-0 marks, although both of DeSoto’s wins came at home and both of Frostproof’s came on the road. Each has a win over Sebring. DeSoto opened its regular season with a 28-6 win over the Blue Streaks, while Frostproof prevailed on the road, 18-9, in week two.
DeSoto will open its district schedule on the road next Friday night against Palmetto.
Frostproof will stay at home to celebrate Homecoming next Friday at Faris Brannen Stadium with a 7 p.m. kick-off against Mulberry.
