Charles Tillson Fox, M.D., died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, of sudden respiratory illness. He was 92.

A former resident of Carthage, N.Y., and Lake Placid, Dr. and Mrs. Fox moved to Rockville, Md. in 2004 to be close to their two daughters.

Born in Annapolis, Maryland on
Jan. 20, 1920, to Ruth Bullard Chapman and Earle Blair Fox, he graduated from Annapolis High School in 1936 where he was active in the Boy Scouts and a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Fox received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1941 where he also captained the lacrosse team. Dr. Fox enlisted as an officer in the Army on April 9, 1942. He served as a World War II Radar Calibration Officer and Commander for the Royal Air Force 13th Division, retiring from active duty as a Captain in March 1946. After the war he returned to Philadelphia, Pa., and entered medical school at Temple University. He obtained his M.D. and went on to specialize in general surgery, practicing in the Philadelphia area until 1964.

Dr. Fox married Nancy Patricia Rhodes in Philadelphia on April 7, 1956. They relocated to Carthage in 1964, where they raised four children. Dr. Fox served as General Surgeon at Carthage Area Hospital until his retirement from surgery in 1985. He continued working part time in the area, eventually retiring to Lake Placid in 1994.

While in Carthage, Dr. Fox was an active member of Carlowden County Club, the Black River Valley Club, the Ontario Power Squadron and a congregant and vestry member of Grace Episcopal Church. His lifetime passions were sailing, gardening, power boating and golfing.

Dr. Fox is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Nancy R. Fox, former teacher at West Carthage and Carthage Elementary School and his older brother, Earle B. Fox Jr. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Fox Hayes of Annapolis, Md.; and his children; Priscilla Fox-Morrill (J. Stephen) of Rockville, Md., Charles T. Fox, Jr. of Auburn, Calif., Peter R. Fox (Sheryl Shumate Fox) of Camden, S.C., and Susan Fox Boltz (Brian), of Brookville, Md. He also has six grandchildren; Brian Boltz, Jr, Eric Boltz, Robert Fox, Martin Fox, Kara Morrill and Kassidy Morrill.

A service will be held at Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave, Rockville, Md. at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28. Graveside services will be at Hillington Cemetery, Morris, N.Y., on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capital Area Chapter, 3701 Pender Drive, Suite 400, Fairfax, VA 22030 or www.alz.org/nca.
