“It was a shame to lose this one,” said Steve Bullard who assists Jackie Coyne in the coaching of the Lake Placid Lady Dragon varsity basketball team. “We didn’t follow our assignments on defense, they out-hustled us and that’s our fault,” said Coach Jackie Coyne after the game. Okeechobee, in its defense, brought three talented basketball players to the game: Carley McCain, Taylor Trent and Bethany Stuart and their consistent scoring led the visiting Okeechobee Brahmans to a 65-60 win over the Lady Dragons Thursday evening, Dec. 6.
The first quarter, which ended with Okeechobee leading by two, 18-16, evolved into a duel between Lake Placid’s point guard, Alexandria Coyne, and Okeechobee’s McCain. Lady Dragon center, Breauna Corley found Shaquavia Gayle underneath for Lake Placid’s first basket and Coyne passed to Corley for the second Lady Dragon score. Meanwhile, Brahman standout McCain hit three in a row to put the visitors up, 12-6, midway through the initial period. Coyne, however, sank a pair three-pointers, the second one tying the score at 16 a piece. Okeechobee scored at the buzzer to take an 18-16 lead.
