Michael Newton-Brown tackles Hollywood and one of its more notable names when he designs the set and directs “Sunset Boulevard” at The Players in Sarasota which opens Jan. 10. Advance ticket sales have been so brisk the run has already been extended to Jan. 27.
Based on the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical rather than the black-and-white film, the story still concerns silent motion picture star Norma Desmond who does not realize her star faded with the arrival of “talkies.” Living in her Hollywood mansion, she is ever ready to make yet another walk down the red carpet. When a down-on-his-luck screen writer proposes to help rewrite the script she feels is perfect for her return to the top, mutual needs, delusions and circumstances combine to make a spell-binding story.
