EL JOBEAN — Charlotte County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a South Gulf Cove man after he burglarized and stole items from the home of a woman who is currently an inmate in the Charlotte County Jail. Arrested was Donald Robert Costa, 39, of the 10400 block of New Brunswick Street. CCSO responded to a call Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the 14000 block of Worthwhile Road in El Jobean of a reported burglary and theft in progress. Deputies contacted a neighbor who saw a man outside the home standing next to several household items on the ground, including televisions, leather chairs, and suitcases. The neighbor called the inmate’s son, who lives a few houses away. When the son arrived, he asked what he was doing and the man said he was collecting his belongings as he used to live there. The son, 25, said that was not true. The man then changed his story and said his mother owes him $800 and she gave him permission to pawn items to bond her out of jail. The man then walked away and was followed by both men, who saw him get into a red car and drive off toward Englewood. The son of the woman in jail said he’s seen the man before and believed his name was Don.
Deputies contacted the 41-year-old mother at the jail, and she said she did not give anyone permission to enter or remove anything. She advised the man’s name was Donald Costa and he never lived there. The woman was arrested Sept. 28 for burglary, grand theft and violation of probation and remains in jail on no bond. Photo lineups were made and the woman, her son and the neighbor all positively identified Costa. A probable cause for the arrest of Costa was made. At 7:30 p.m., CCSO received a call from Port Charlotte Town Center Mall wanting a man trespassed due to bizarre behavior. When a deputy responded, he made contact with the man who was Costa and he was arrested. Costa requested his computer bag and medications from his rental car in the mall parking lot. After being retrieved, a search found a pill bottle with 31 buprenorphine pills inside, a schedule-3 narcotic with no prescription. Costa was taken to the Charlotte County Jail and charged with burglary, grand theft, trafficking in buprenorphine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Costa remains in jail on no bond.
