SARASOTA COUNTY — With the election for two seats on the Sarasota County Commission a little more than a year away, District 4 hopeful Alan Maio already has $73,400 in his campaign war chest — more than three times the amount of either of the other two commission candidates.
Maio, a principal with Sarasota engineering firm Kimley-Horn and Associates that has previously served on the county Planning Commission, has raised $82,995 since filing to run for the seat that will be vacated by longtime commissioner Nora Patterson next year, according to campaign reports provided by the county Supervisor of Elections office. (Patterson, who has been in office since 1998, is being forced to give up her seat due to a 2012 Supreme Court ruling on term limits.) That includes $700 in in-kind contributions, which can consist of campaign photos, refreshments for fundraisers or other items that are donated for campaign use.
