SARASOTA COUNTY — As Dr. Robert Marbut works toward completing his report on the homelessness problem around Sarasota County, he revealed a key fact Friday that caught area leaders off guard: Englewood, then North Port, lead the area in homeless families.
Speaking at a Tiger Bay Club luncheon at the Venetian Golf and River Club in Venice, Marbut, a national homelessness expert brought in by the county and its cities to help come up with a solution for the issue, said the highest concentration of homeless families in the county is in the Englewood area. Marbut said it’s an aspect of the housing situation that took a negative turn during the economic recession. North Port was a close second, followed by Nokomis and Venice.
