Hurricanes: Get out when told, have a plan

While some 300 Polk County fifth graders were learning from weather experts about hurricanes, Polk officials were discussing the upcoming hurricane season with the National Hurricane Center Director, Tampa’s chief federal meteorologist and Polk’s Emergency Management director.

Students from five area elementary schools toured exhibits set up at Sun ‘n Fun at Lakeland Linder Airport on May 4, while National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists and forecasters taught them the basics of hurricane development and storm surge.
