Carol F. Van Sickle, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2012.
Carol was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Bellefonte, Pa.
Her parents, Lydia C. and Richard C. Funk, moved to Highland Park, Mich., three years later, where Carol lived with her family until 1948. She attended Hillsdale College and graduated from Michigan Normal (Eastern Michigan University). Carol married Robert E. Miller Jr. and had three children, Christine (Paul) Viergever, Bruce Miller and Beth Miller. Robert and Carol divorced, and Carol married Ted Van Sickle. Ted’s three children, Gerald (Chrystal) Van Sickle, Constance Johnson and Rebecca Van Sickle, loved Carol, as did her own children. After college graduation, Carol taught physical education at Highland Park High School, and was the coach of the swim team. She later taught physical education at Brighton High School, and coached their volleyball team. She earned a Master of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University while teaching at Brighton. After retiring from teaching in 1981, Carol had the time to become a talented quilter, and she leaves us with many beautiful quilts to cherish. Until her passing, she was still quilting, riding a bicycle (three-wheel), swimming, cross-stitching and playing bridge. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her: the bridge groups, the quilters, the garden club and, especially, her family. She was not one to comprise anything she did — it was always perfect.
Carol is survived by her children; her husband of 36 years, Ted; grandchildren, Katherine Viergever, Justin Sorrell and Nathan Sorrell; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Flanner and Buchanan — Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Ind. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at the memorial gardens. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
