Virgil Cline, 100, of Deep Creek, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. Virgil was born on February 18, 1912 in Inez, Kentucky. It was there, as a child, that Virgil met his future wife, Velma Robinson, to whom he was married in 1934.

He was a longtime supervisor at The Columbia Gas Company and his teams brought the first supply of natural gas to Washington, DC. During WWII, Virgil and his family lived in Akron, Ohio, where he worked at The Goodyear Aircraft Company producing Corsair fighter planes to support the war effort.

Virgil and Velma retired to Pompano Beach, Fla. in 1971 and to Punta Gorda in 1997. Virgil was an active member of The Christ Community United Methodist Church in Harbour Heights. He enjoyed spending time with family; gardening; talking with neighbors; and exploring the country with his wife, Velma, and the Airstream Wally Byam Caravan Club.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Karen and her husband Robert Wedemeyer of Punta Gorda, Fla.; grandchildren William Savage of Miami, Fla., Michael Savage of Chicago, Illinois; Jeffrey Pfeifer, David Pfeifer and Stephanie Norville of Denver, Colorado; Scott Wedemeyer of Cincinnati, Ohio; and ten great-grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-three years, Velma, and his daughter, Sandra Savage.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Avenue, Punta Gorda, Fla. Funeral Services in celebration of Virgil’s life will be held at The Christ Community United Methodist Church, 27000 Sunnybrook Road, Harbour Heights, Fla., on Friday, January 4 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
