Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Henry (Jack) Schweizer passed away from renal failure, heart and lung problems on February 15th at the age of 89 in Punta Gorda, at home under the care of Hospice. Jack was the son of Capt. William E. Schweizer and Beatrice (Rand) Schweizer and grew up in Bergenfield, NJ, where he and his future wife Bernice Goodeve went to grade school together. Jack’s family was transferred to Two Harbors, Minn. and graduated from High School in 1941. He was accepted as a cadet and started officer training in New Orleans as a USMM cadet January 1, 1942. He sailed the North Atlantic in early 1942 in the convoys going to Russia with supplies on the SS City of Omaha, and upon graduation from USMMA at Kings Point NY 1943 was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and sailed on the USS Housatonic in the Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and in 1944/5 with the Pacific Fleet receiving (4) battle stars for Leyte, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa (2) Japan, Yellow Sea. Returning to San Francisco in December of 1945 LT. JG Schweizer and Bernice were married. They celebrated their 67th anniversary. He completed credits for his Engineering Degree at Newark College of Engineering, at night in 1950 and received his degree from the USMMA in 1950. Before retiring 27 years ago to Punta Gorda Isles FL they lived in Upper Saddle River NY and summered at Lake Wallenpaupack PA. He is survived by his wife, son, Kenneth (Dorothy) and grandchildren Jillian (Schweizer) Villani, Ryan and Adam and Son Walter and grandchild Lee Schweizer, and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Gianna and Aiden and his elder brother William Schweizer Jr. of Owego NY as well as many nieces and nephews. He and Bernice lead a full life with travel to all parts of the globe covering 5 continents and every state in the US and all but one province of Canada. Many of those trips were with their family. There summer home at Lake Wallenpaupack was the focal point for family activities during the summer months and the joy of their lives. They were members of the Punta Boat Club and the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club for many years and enjoyed sailing the wonderful waters around Florida and the many friends and neighbors over the years. Jack was a member of the Saddle River Reformed Church in Upper Saddle River, NJ and a former member of their Consistory. His ashes will be buried in the historic cemetery with a Memorial Service to be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home.
