Henry A. Owens Jr., 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Tidewell Hospice house.

He was a native Floridian, having been born Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1932, in Brooksville, Fla., to Henry A. Owens Sr. and the former Gladys Ruth Rhodes.

Mr. Owens was 3 years old when his mother died. He and his older siblings went to an orphanage in Alva, Fla. Mr. Owens attended Charlotte County, Fla., Schools. In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. His last posting was in Fort Knox, Ky., where he taught artillery. After retiring from the Army in 1973, Mr. Owens worked for Charlotte County and the city of Venice, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, the former Anne Hunsinger; daughters, Elizabeth (Mike) Blue of Hannibal, Mo., and Patricia Cruz of North Port, Fla.; sons, Robert Owens of Quincy, Ill., and Edward (Sherrie) Owens of Melber, Ky.; brother, James (Bobbie) Owens of Abilene, Texas; sisters, Virginia (Vernon) Garret of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Amber Montague of Lake City, Fla.; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Dave and Deirdre Dickson, whose daily kindness can never be repaid, and Ariana Cruz of Port Charlotte, who continues to visit Mr. Owens’ beloved German shepherd, Sarge. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy, the mother of his children; and two sisters, Viola Owens and Lucille Hickman.

Military honors will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Fla. All friends are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory would be appreciated to the Animal Welfare League, 3519 Drance St., Port Charlotte, FL 33980.

The family would like to thank Dr. Arturo Rodriguez-Martin and his staff for their kind support and help, also the wonderful staff at Tidewell Hospice.
