With a roster that featured a number of early round draft picks from recent years, including Jake Hager, Richie Shaffer and Drew Vettleson, the Charlotte Stone Crabs were a preseason favorite to win the Florida State League crown.

After all, the core of this season’s squad, including manager Brady Williams, played on the Bowling Green team that went 80-60 in 2012, won the Midwest League’s second-half title and lost in the first round of the playoffs. There was every reason to believe they would post similar results at the next level.
