Sermon of the Week: When the doctor says, ‘I have bad news’

Throughout nearly 30 years of pastoring, I have sat with numerous people when they received less than good news from their physician. Reports ranged from diabetes to various blockages to terminal illnesses. I have always been aware that one day I could be seated where they were. In August of this year, after a colonoscopy, the physician looked at my wife and me and spoke the words, “I have bad news, we found cancer.”

Even while clinging to God’s peace, the emotions of shock, fear and uncertainty were very real. Surgery was required, and full recovery was anticipated. Prior to surgery, scans were necessary to determine if the cancer had spread, and during the surgery, lymph nodes would be removed for further testing. Full recovery was anticipated, but what if ...? Regardless of the strength of your faith in God, you can’t help but wonder.
