At the 1976 Republican National Convention, the South Carolina delegation booked the Kansas City motel where I was a night auditor. I also operated the graveyard shift switchboard, placing all the delegates’ long-distance calls. No room kept me busier than Sen. Strom Thurmond’s.

After the convention, the senator gave me an attractive silk tie bearing the state’s emblem. A handwritten “thank you” for professionally handling his phone calls accompanied it.
