Barbara Ann Safron

Barbara Ann Safron, 84, of Brevard, N.C., and Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at her residence.

She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Paul and Grace Davis.

Barbara was a graduate of the University of Miami, Fla., where she played clarinet in the marching band. She started the first band at St. Charles Borromeo School in Port Charlotte, Fla., and she also served as principal and taught science and math. Barbara was the founder of the Port Charlotte Symphony. She was very active with the Brevard Music Center. Her passions were marching band and tennis. Barbara attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard. She was raised in Miami.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Elwood Philip Safron; sons, Philip Paul (Maureen H.) Safron and John Elwood (Bridgett Ann) Safron, all of Port Charlotte; sister, Janie Bonner of California; grandchildren, Christopher Safron, Alicia Rebol, John Gray, Kyke Safron, Shawn Safron and Justin Safron; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gene Safron; and her sisters, Carol Buss and Nancy Kynerd.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at Peace Lutheran Church, 21500 Gibralter Drive, Port Charlotte, FL 33952. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Band Camp at Brevard Music Center by calling 828-862-2100 or visiting www.brevardmusic.org. Burial was at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda.
