Less than half of all commercial waste was being recycled in Florida in 2012, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. In 2008, the state Legislature established a new statewide recycling goal of 75 percent to be achieved by 2020.
This week, North Venice-based Tervis was recognized for achieving a 63 percent average commercial recycling rate in 2012 compared to the average for the state of 45 percent. In the first six months of this year, Tervis achieved a recycling rate of 56 percent.
