Thomas Osborn Edmondson, 83, of Nokomis, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Meredith (Senterfit); four children and their spouses, Melissa Bausman (Cooke), Brian Edmondson (Nancy), Brad Edmondson (Tatiana) and Michael Edmondson (Jennifer); five grandchildren; and a brother, John, of Sunrise, Fla.

Tom was born March 18, 1929, in Bronxville, N.Y., and raised on farms in Granger Township, Ohio, (1934-41) and Culpeper, Va. In 1947, the family moved to Sarasota and Tom’s father, George M. Edmondson Jr., established Edmondson Farms in Nokomis. Tom attended Stetson University, and served in the Air Force. After returning from the service, Tom and his brother Bill managed Edmondson Farms Dairy until the mid 1970s. Tom then began a radio career at WAMR Venice, serving as the host of the morning “Digest” program from 1978 until his retirement in 1994. Tom played in several local bands and hosted dances at the Venice Community Center from 1974 until 1999.

Tom’s many friends will also cherish memories of his jovial sense of humor and fondness for good company. He was a Christian and a constitutionalist with a keen interest in preserving individual liberty. He served as regional coordinator for the John Birch Society from 1963 until his retirement and was active in the cause until his death. John McManus, president of the John Birch Society, said, “America has lost one of its finest sons.”
