John D. Young 76, of Sarasota, passed away Monday Jan. 20, 2013, at 11:30 p.m.

He was born Dec. 1, 1936, in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Dudley Young and Barbara (Anderson) Young, both deceased.

He is survived by his beloved, Maryann Baker; his daughter from his first marriage, Sherry Holroyd (Seattle); sister, Suzanna Young; brother, Richard A. Young, and wife, Deanna; and grandson, William L. Holroyd, his wife Rianna and two children (of Seattle).

John’s family came to Englewood in 1949. He graduated from Venice Nokomis High School in 1955 and earned a business degree at USF. He served in the Army Reserve. He worked for Honeywell Corp. in Florida and Texas, and later at a mobile home manufacturing company in Thompson, Ga., as a production manager.

He once owned and operated Young Motors, a VW repair and sales in Nokomis and worked for Sarasota Co. and, later, All Florida Grassing, which “greened” commercial sites and roadsides. John, a “motorhead,” loved classic cars, flying his Comanche, motorcycling — even riding mowers, among other pursuits. Having a larger-than-life personality, John enjoyed joking around and always had a joke to share.

He will be missed by his sweetheart, Maryann, and all of us.

Services: Memorial Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the Venice Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2375 Seaboard Ave., followed by a reception. For more information, call 941-753-7433 or 941-496-7896.
