James W. Wherritt

James W. Wherritt, of Venice, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Claire Bridge of Venice. He was born Feb. 26, 1915.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He is survived by his longtime companion, Ida Wolfe.

Wherritt was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and would attend the regular get-togethers in Pearl Harbor. He served on the USS Sacramento, a destroyer escort, and witnessed firsthand Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. He once said he could actually see the pilots’ faces as they dropped bombs on U.S. ships.
