George J. Balch Jr., age 82, of Nokomis, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013.
He was born in College Point, N.Y., on July 21, 1931. George moved from Ocean Gate, N.J., to Florida in 1971 and worked in construction until his retirement. His favorite pastimes were sailing in the Gulf and woodworking.
George was a Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
George is survived by his companion, Marilyn DeWan, of Nokomis, Fla.; his children, Robert Balch (Nadine) of Garden Ridge, Texas, Carol Lake (Dan) of North Port, Fla., James George Balch (Kathi) of Bradenton, Fla., and Michael Christopher Balch of Venice, Fla.; brothers John of Tucson, Ariz., and Donald of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and granddaughter Cynthia Chambers.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Epiphany Cathedral Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at Venice Memorial Gardens. Farley Funeral Home is handling arrangements. To send condolences, visit: FarleyFuneralHome.com.
