The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) will maintain its current powers and structure for at least another year, after a bill that would’ve drastically weakened the 93-year-old organization died on the floor of the Florida Senate Friday afternoon.

House Bill 1279 — and its Senate companion SB 1164 — would’ve cut the FHSAA’s budget in half (from $5 million to $2.5 million), replaced executive director Roger Dearing and the 16-member board of directors, stripped the organization of its authority to govern transfers and limited eligibility-related investigations to a maximum of 90 days.
